Cyrene

Cyrene is Libya’s most complete ancient Greek city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in the 7th century BC by settlers from the drought-stricken island of Thera (modern Santorini), Cyrene quickly grew into the most important Greek city in North Africa. Under King Battus IV (515–470 BC), it enjoyed stability and prosperity. Later, it fell under the rule of Ptolemy I of Egypt in 322 BC.

In 96 BC, Cyrenaica came under Roman rule, becoming a province eighteen years later. The city thrived under the Romans until the Jewish revolt of 115 AD brought widespread destruction. Rebuilt under Emperor Hadrian, Cyrene flourished again, only to suffer devastating damage from a massive earthquake in 365 AD during the Byzantine era. Christianity was slow to take root here, and many pagan temples were desecrated during reconstruction.

Highlights of Cyrene:

Temple of Zeus – Larger than the Parthenon in Athens, this massive 5th-century BC temple (32m x 70m) reflects Cyrene’s importance in the ancient Greek world.

Sanctuary of Apollo – A remarkable complex of temples, baths, and public buildings overlooking the plain, dedicated to the city’s patron deity.

Agora – The bustling heart of civic life, once a lively public square.

Gymnasium/Forum – A vast open square built in the 2nd century BC, later adapted by the Romans.

Skyrota – The city’s main street, still lined with columns carved with images of Hermes and Hercules.

House of Jason Magnus – The elegant home of a 2nd-century high priest of Apollo, showcasing Cyrene’s wealth.

Theatre – Dating back to the 6th century BC, this grand theatre once seated 1,000 spectators.

Wall of Nikodemus – A Roman-era wall protecting the sanctuary from the nearby amphitheatre and wild animals.

Cyrene Museum – A treasure trove of statues, inscriptions, and mosaics, preserving the city’s long history.
