According to archaeologists, Tocra represents a remarkable example of how a modest Libyan (Berber) settlement once looked, reflecting the daily life of the majority of ancient locals. During the Greek period, Tokra served as an important export port. Its influence grew under Roman rule in the 1st century BC, when it developed into a busy commercial centre. However, the city gradually lost its status during the Byzantine period and eventually fell into decline after the Arab conquest.
Today, visitors can still see traces of Tocra’s past. The 60-metre-long city walls remain partially intact, along with sections of its fortification towers. The ancient enclosure originally had three gates and contained several important public buildings, including a basilica and an arena, making Tokra an evocative glimpse into the layered history of Cyrenaica.
