The mosaics originally decorated the floor of the 6th-century Byzantine eastern church, and were discovered by labourers in 1957. Today, they are considered among the greatest archaeological treasures of Libya. The vibrant panels depict scenes from daily life, natural landscapes, and folk traditions, blending pagan influences with Christian iconography.
Nearby, the remains of the western church can also be visited. This church later became incorporated into an Islamic castle, which today houses the museum.
The name Qasr Libya means “Castle of Libya,” and the settlement is believed to have been connected to the ancient village of Olbia. During the Byzantine period, it served as the seat of a Bishopric and, despite being attacked several times, the city was restored to its former glory by Emperor Justinian in 539 AD.
