Idhan Murzuq is one of the most beautiful desert sites in the world. Massive and complex are the Idhan Murzuq sand dune formations, and are a hotspot in Libya. This incomprehensibly vast mountain range over 35.000 sq km is made entirely of sand. Dune after dune rise 100 or 200 metres above the flat-bottomed valleys of white sand. Sharp sand ridges sculpted by the wind lead to elegant summits. Geologists distinguish three types of sand dunes: longitudinal dunes; transverse dunes (curved); and star dunes (with several arms converging towards a single peak).
The notherface of the sand sea rises up from the impossibly barren Murzuq Plateau. From a distance during the heat of the day, the Idehan Murzuq shimmers pale yellow in the heat haze. In the midst of the dunes as the sun lowers, the undulations change into subtle magical plays of light shadow
The Idhan Murzuq sand sea is a popular destination for desert adventure 4×4 drivers.
